The Co-Founders of KCIA

The founders of KCIA

From left to right: Allison Spencer, Nicolle Hays, Meagan Stach, and Tami Lewis

Allison Spencer, Nicolle Hays, Meagan Stach, and Tami Lewis are the co-founders who met through a support group led by Allison at her church. Their passion for raising awareness about infertility with their own families and friends led them to establish the Kansas City Infertility Awareness Foundation in 2011.  Realizing the need to educate the Kansas City community about the effects of infertility, these four embarked on the journey host an annual conference during National Infertility Awareness Week.

In the beginning, their vision was to host an annual conference to help those affected by infertility learn the numerous family building options available.  However, the need for more support was immediately evident.  Four more ladies (Jaclyn Alcantara, Karree Tidwell, Jenny Matthews, and Angie Shemwell) joined the board in 2012.  In 2014, KCIA added an Advisory Board of 18 ladies to help with the monthly support group meetings, monthly social gatherings, and quarterly educational seminars.

My husband, Dustin, and I began our journey to grow our family in July 2008. Over a 4 1/2 year period we tried practically every medical infertility treatment option available: Clomid, IUI, HSG, SHG, laproscopy, hysteroscopy, and IVF. In January 2012, we learned our chances to conceive on our own were less than 2% due to male factor infertility and my poor egg quality and low egg quantity. So, we decided to give IVF one more chance, and realized we conceived a child on our own! Simon was born October 27, 2012. We would love to have another child, but have decided not to take the infertility treatment route due to the costs involved. Dustin and I believe one of our purposes in life is to reach out to others struggling to grow their family so they no longer feel alone.

Our journey to start a family began in 2008 when my husband and I found out we were pregnant. At 35 weeks along, we were heartbroken to learn that our daughter's heart had stopped beating. We delivered our first child, Annabelle, stillborn. After my pregnancy with Annabelle, I had difficulty conceiving again. With several unsuccessful IUI attempts, we felt that adoption was the path for us. In early 2011, we were blessed with our first son through domestic adoption. Between 2011 and 2012, I had two pregnancies’ that ended in miscarriage. In 2013, I was able to maintain a healthy pregnancy and welcomed our second son. KCIA has been such a special part of my life during our journey.

My husband and I began trying to start a family after two years of marriage, I was 30 and he was 32. My cycles had always been perfect so we had no reason to believe we'd have any trouble. After a year of trying, we sought medical help. I had a laproscopy surgery and discovered one of my tubes was blocked and the other mostly blocked. We tried several cycles of oral and injectible medications with IUI. When those failed, it became time to pursue IVF or adoption. We felt adoption was the path for us. We ended up adopting through a private situation, and our amazing son, Tucker, was born in June of 2011. We always talked about how we would try to grow our family from there. Right after Tucker's first birthday, as we were considering getting our homestudy updated, we found out I was pregnant. We were shocked! Our second amazing son, Tanner joined us in February of 2013. My passion is providing support to those going through a struggle to build their family. I lead the KCIA support group that meets monthly, so please contact me if you have any questions!

Our journey to grow a family began in July 2009. I stopped taking birth control pills at that time, and quickly realized there could be difficulties conceiving as I never had a menstrual cycle. Knowing the only chance of conceiving was through assisted reproductive technology, I aggressively began pursuing treatment. A failed IVF, a failed attempt at a frozen embryo transfer, at least 8 failed/cancelled IUIs; it was finally through a second IVF that I gave birth to my son. Jude Knox Reinhard was born July 24, 2012. The support group I attend (with the other founders) is what got me through my infertility journey. Through KCIA, I want to pay it forward to help others going through this difficult journey.
